Running experiments inside a computer

Many phenomena in nature and in society are difficult to study by experiment. Even when an experiment is possible, it may require a large facility and considerable cost, so that examining the phenomenon under a range of conditions becomes impractical. The motion of solar flares and the solar wind, the spread of smoke in a fire, and the evacuation behavior and flow of people are examples of such phenomena.

This is where computer simulation is used. By reproducing a phenomenon in a simulation, we are able to analyze what experiment alone cannot reach, and to clarify the mechanism behind it.

In our group, we aim to understand the mechanisms of complex phenomena through simulation research.

For students who may wish to join us

Programming is a part of the work in our group. It will be reviewed carefully after you join us, but you are encouraged to study the content of the programming courses thoroughly beforehand. Mathematical expressions are also involved, so please make sure that you have a solid grasp of the first-year mathematics courses as well. Students who are willing to learn mathematics and programming may find our group a good fit.

Questions about how to study mathematics or programming are welcome even before assignment to a laboratory. Please feel free to contact us.

To begin with, study with the aim of being able to complete Assignment 1 in the first term of the third year.

Students who are considering joining the group are referred to our research introduction (in Japanese).

Research environment

  • Computers … Students work mainly on their own PCs. A supercomputer is used when a calculation calls for it.
  • Software … Python and Linux are used throughout, together with software specific to each topic, such as FDS and OpenFOAM.
  • Work space … The student room on the seventh floor of Trinity Hall.
